Welcome back to Author Interview Corner. As a special treat, we have a double dose of horror today. Let’s get to know mother and son writing team Suzie & Bruce Lockhart…
How long have you been writing?
Suzie: Since I was a teenager. Professionally about 3 years.
Bruce: You mean Horror? 😉 Kidding— professionally only about 2 & 1/2 years.
Do events from your past play a role in your fiction?
Suzie: Most definitely. There is probably some horror in everyone’s lives…
Bruce: Absolutely, I think you have to draw on past experiences to really make your writing come through as authentic. I believe Horror is in every genre; it’s tailored to the individual, so the more you can draw from a personal experience the better.
Has there ever been a story that was particularly challenging to write? How did you get through it?
Suzie: ‘So Vein’, in Diabolic Publication’s ‘Dying to Live’ anthology. It was challenging due to the fact there was a moment of, ahem… intimacy between the main character and her dark ‘love’ interest. That was very difficult until Bruce said, “Just look at me as your business partner.”
And then it was still difficult.
Bruce: Yes, it’s actually in Adventures In Horrorland, entitled ‘Shadow Rain’. I got through it by acknowledging it was something I needed to do, a part of me that needed to be put on paper.
Your latest title, Adventures In Horrorland, is a collection of 20 disturbing tales that will take the reader on a “roller coaster ride of insanity”. Do you have a personal favorite in this collection?
Suzie: Even though it’s an older one, ‘Playing with Fire’ which had previously appeared in ‘Mistresses of the Macabre’. (It’s also featured in the same podcast as Bruce mentions below.) It deals with the lengths a mother will go to for her child. I was honored to be among some of the finest female authors in the industry.
Bruce: Oh, that’s a tough one. My own personal favorite story was one I wrote, which was actually read on a podcast December 6th, entitled ‘Burn Baby Burn’. Oh yeah, it’s dark… haha.
Where can we find your other work?
Suzie: Dark Moon was first to publish us, and since we have both been in Sirens Call, Horrified Press, James Ward Kirk Fiction, and Diabolic Publications together. I also had a story place in the top ten in the ‘Women on Writing’ Spring Flash Fiction contest. (http://www.wow-womenonwriting.com/downloads/printable/57-FE1-Spring13Contest-SuzieLockhart.html)
Bruce: Adventures In Horrorland has the most complete collection of our short stories, but Sirens Call, Dark Moon, Dark Lore, and Horrified Press are all good places to look. We just submitted our first sci-fi piece, ‘By Design’, which we hope gets accepted. We are also the editors of Nightmare Stalkers & Dream Walkers; while it’s not our own writing, except for one story, it is one of our most important accomplishments.
What are you working on at the moment?
Suzie: Trying to buy a laptop, so I can work more. I’m a glutton for punishment, and we also need to continue rewriting the YA novel we keep rewriting…lol.
Bruce: Submissions for Nightmare Stalkers & Dream Walkers #2. We’re looking at you, Lindsey. Haha. We recently tried our hand at the Sci-Fi market, freelance editing another author’s novel, beta reading two others, and editing our own; plus I’m personally working on writing a fallen angel series, with a twist of course ;). Stay tuned.
Where do you see yourself in ten years from now?
Suzie: Getting paid a lot more for doing what I love;0)
Bruce: Still tall, dark and handsome, and hopefully richer than I am now.
I have to ask: What scares you?
Bruce: I could take the high road and say nothing (lol), but we all know that’s not true. Isolation, I suppose, would be at the top of my list.
What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
Suzie: Take the plunge. You will never know, otherwise. And if you believe in a story, keep rewriting it until you can’t stand looking at it. Then it will be ready to submit. Isn’t that a happy thought?
Bruce: Don’t be afraid, no pun intended on your previous question. The worst thing someone can say to you is, “No. You suck, go die.” See, now don’t you feel better? =D
Where can we find you on the web?
